A man who shoplifted a $20 bottle of rum paid a heavy price when he was sentenced to a month in prison.

Kelvin Warner was challenged by the store manager at Lindo’s supermarket in Warwick when he tried to leave without paying for the Cockspur on Saturday, April 2.

Prosecutor Maria Sofianos told Magistrates’ Court that when Warner, 20, was told he had to pay, he replied “I know, I know,” then tried to walk out the door again.

At this point he was physically detained by staff, who called the police.

Warner admitted to theft, but asked Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner to hear his explanation.

“I went in the store earlier that day and bought a bottle and a six-pack,” he said.

“I went to get another bottle but I left the money in the car. I was trying to get the money from the car. I should have put the bottle down. I don’t know why I didn’t.”

Mr Warner made no reply, other than to tell him he must serve 30 days in jail.
