  • Guest Speaker: Actor, activist and writer Christopher Kennedy Lawford, who is coming to Bermuda to speak about addiction.

A member of the famed Kennedy clan who has battled drug and alcohol addiction will deliver the keynote address at a dinner hosted by an addiction treatment organisation.

Christopher Kennedy Lawford, a nephew of the late US President John F Kennedy, has been in recovery for more than 24 years and will share his experiences at the first Richard J Caron Award of Excellence Dinner.

He is an actor, writer, lawyer, activist, and public speaker and has spent the past five years working with partners in private industry, the non-profit sector, governments and patient advocacy to raise awareness about addiction.

The dinner will be hosted at the Fairmont Southampton hotel on Thursday, June 2, by Caron Bermuda, an international leader in the treatment of alcoholism and drug addiction.

The proceeds will contribute to the Caron Bermuda Scholarship Fund, which provides financial aid to families in Bermuda who need assistance with the cost of overseas residential treatment for their loved ones.

The proceeds will also help develop Caron Bermuda’s Adolescent and Family programming, which began in March 2011 in collaboration with Bermuda Youth Counselling Services and local schools.

The inaugural event will honour RenaissanceRe executive vice president Peter Durhager for his personal commitment to the Caron Bermuda community.

“The extraordinary level of support, understanding and compassion demonstrated by Peter over the past four years has been the foundation upon which Caron Bermuda has developed into the integrated entity that exists today,” said Gita Blakeney Saltus, Caron’s regional vice president.

“Peter’s personal dedication to the development of best practice recovery services as an imperative for Bermuda, supported by the generous investment of RenaissanceRe, has assisted profoundly in the development of Caron Bermuda as a viable, world-class treatment-based solution.”
