When it’s time to celebrate Father’s Day, no self-respecting dad wants to pour himself a bowl of cereal and call it a day.
Dads deserve a big hearty meal to get them through the day, so give the man what he wants! Here are some tasty ideas to get dad up and out of bed to enjoy his day no matter what time of day that happens to be.
Grilled cheese, egg and
bacon sandwich
Start the day with this tasty twist on a boyhood favourite grilled cheese
2 eggs, fried
Bacon, cooked until crispy
Butter
2 slices white bread
Cheddar or sliced cheese
Butter the outsides of two slices of bread. Heat a grill pan to medium heat. On the non-buttered side of the bread, pile the sandwich with cheese slices, one fried egg, slices of crispy bacon, the second fried egg, and top with a few more slices of cheese and the second piece of bread.
Carefully place the prepared sandwich on the hot grill pan. Grill on either side until golden brown on the outside and the cheese has started to melt. Serve with ketchup, or other favourite condiment.
Marmalade-glazed
sausage sandwich
This big-dog sandwich is great for lunch, or a late breakfast after dad has had a lie-in.
8 sausages e.g. Cumberland or Lincolnshire
1 red onion, sliced
4 tablespoons fine cut orange marmalade
4 white buns
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place the sausages and onion on a baking tray and mix in the marmalade and 2 tablespoons water. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden. Meanwhile, toast the buns. Add 2 sausages onto each bun, spoon over the onions.
Beef tacos
Spice up dad’s lunch or dinner with these tasty tacos.
2 tablespoons chipotle chili powder
2 tablespoons garlic powder
2 tablespoons cumin
3 teaspoons coarse salt
3 ½ pounds skirt steak, cut into thin strips
Flour tortillas
Lettuce, chopped
Red onion, sliced
Salsa
Avocado, sliced, or prepared guacamole
Sour cream
Limes
Combine spice mixture and toss with steak to coat. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Wrap tortillas in tinfoil then place in the oven to warm. Meanwhile, heat oil in a saute pan over medium-high heat. Add meat to pan, working in batches so as not to crowd the pan. Cook meat for approximately 3 minutes on either side, stirring occasionally to achieve even colour. Set up a taco-making station with red onions, salsa, avocado (or guacamole), sour cream and limes. As soon as the meat is cooked serve up the warmed tortillas and allow everyone to assemble their tacos as desired.
Rocky-road brownies
What would Father’s Day be without a sweet treat? Dads will go ga-ga for this delicious mix of chewy, chocolatey, salty and sweet all in one package!
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces, plus more for pan
1 bag (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup packed light-brown sugar
½ teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
¾ cup all-purpose flour, (spooned and levelled)
1 cup miniature marshmallows
½ cup chopped nuts, such as cashews, pecans, or walnuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter an 8-inch-square baking pan. Line bottom with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on two sides; butter paper.
In a heatproof bowl set over (not in) a saucepan of simmering water, combine butter and 1 cup chocolate chips. Heat, stirring occasionally, just until melted, 3 to 5 minutes.
Remove mixture from heat; stir in sugars and salt, then eggs, and finally flour, stirring just until combined. Spread batter evenly in prepared pan. Bake until a toothpick inserted in centre comes out with moist crumbs attached, 30 to 35 minutes.
Remove from oven, and sprinkle with remaining chocolate chips, then marshmallows and nuts. Bake until chocolate is shiny and marshmallows are puffed, about 5 minutes. Cool completely in pan. Using paper overhang, lift cake onto a work surface; cut into 16 squares.
