Flights cancelled, beach closed by Ophelia

US flights and lifeguard service are among the casualties of Hurricane Opehlia announced by Government this afternoon.

Flights to Bermuda from Miami and New York have been cancelled due to the Category 3 storm.

Also cancelled are Delta's Atlanta flights DL 657 and DL 656.

Meanwhile, Bermuda Weather Service is predicting stormy weather for the rest of the afternoon and into tomorrow.

"Winds, showers, and risk of thunder increase this afternoon as Hurricane Ophelia approaches from the South. Rough surf, especially on the South Shore, continues while Ophelia passes over 100 miles to our East this evening.

"[Tomorrow], a cold front is expected to pass, bringing more showers and risk of thunder."

American Airlines flights AA 308 from Miami and AA 1438 from New York have been cancelled, a Government spokesman said.

Also cancelled is tonight's Bermuda Nights event planned at Barr's Bay Park.

"The Department of Parks' lifeguard service have erected red, high surf warning signs along the South Shore [and] closed Horsehoe Beach," he said.

"Given the current weather forecast, the lifeguard service expects to resume normal operating hours [tomorrow] from 10am to 6pm in addition to removing the high surf warning signs."
