There is a solution to gang violence
October 31, 2011
Dear Sir,
The gang vendetta continues unabated. Young people, disenfranchised and left to their own devices and choices for survival are caught in a tangled web of drugs, knives and guns because they know little else and have lived within their own real game because they have been otherwise emasculated.
But there is someone whom the authorities credit with being able to turn around this apparently intransigent nightmare. A man called Professor David Kennedy, (whose book to be published by Bloomsbury on November 7: Dont Shoot One Man, a Street Fellowship and the End of Violence in Inner City America) has apparently achieved something close to miracles: To quote the Sunday Times article The Gang Buster, David Kennedys unusual methods for tackling gang violence are having startling results in Americas most brutal crime-ridden cities. Now, he is bringing them to Britain. He has devoted himself to ending gun crime in the face of obstacles which included, and in some places still include, scornful police, suspicious social workers, unscrupulous rivals, unreachable gang members, and a general numbed acceptance that gun casualties on a scale seldom seen outside war zones were somehow to be endured.
Kennedy is more of an expert of gun violence than knife violence, but he is very confident that the two have very much in common.
No stone should be left unturned in the search for an antidote to Bermudas malaise of youth-on-youth violence,
