Wage cut may contravene Act
Cutting Parliamentary salaries

Dear Sir,
In the “old days” Parliamentarians set the levels of their own wages. Because this was deemed to be somewhat unethical, The Ministers and Members of the Legislature Salaries Review Board (MMOLSRB) was established in July 2005 by section 1A of the Ministers and Members of the Legislature (Salaries and Pensions) Act 1975. This Board was to review the salaries every two years after the initial establishment of the wage scale.
What disturbs me with Parliamentarians now indicating that they will take various salary cuts is :
(a) How do they intend to do this?
(b) Is this in some way in contravention of the Act?
(c) If the economy improves will Parliamentarians arbitrarily reset their salaries and at what level?
(d) The confusion and unseemliness of various parties negotiating how much of a cut each should take.
It would seem to me that Parliamentarians (Government and Opposition) should read the Act.
The sensible thing to do would be to ask the MMOLSRB to meet and adjust the salary scale.
