Alf Oughton
A great many positive things have been written and said about Alf Oughton, who died last week, and it is unnecessary to repeat them all here. But what is indisputable is that Mr Oughton, a former Senate President and before that, chief general manager of Belco, was a genuinely good man who always put Bermuda first.
At a time when anti-immigrant feelings seem to be rising, this is important, because although Mr Oughton was born in England, his contributions to Bermuda were enormous. It is worrying to consider what Bermuda would have be like had his impact not been felt.
Professionally, Mr Oughton was a personnel expert, and its no surprise that Belco seemed was a happy place when he was in charge. Similarly, he combined firmness and good sense (the two are not always synonymous) as President of the Senate.
Thank you, Mr Oughton, for your contributions to Bermuda.
