Long without a ‘club’ championship to call their own Bermuda’s itinerant golfers will get a chance to test themselves over the Island’s two public courses later this month.

The brain child of Port Royal Golf Course management trio Andrew Brooks, Alex Madeiros and Greg Maybury, the Public Links Championship will be held at Ocean View and Port Royal over the weekend of April 28-29.

Open to any golfer with a verified handicap, the 36-hole tournament is being backed by the likes of TaylorMade, Addidas, United Airlines and Goslings.

“The whole idea is to create a flagship, Government-backed event, which is open to everyone,” said Brooks. “You don’t have to be a member, and there will be three different divisions, a men’s, a ladies, and a seniors.”

The championship will start with 18 holes at Ocean View on the Saturday and finish with 18 holes at Port Royal on the Sunday, when the person closest to the pin on 16 will win two airline tickets from United.

Entry to the event costs $165, which covers all fees, carts for both days and a cocktail reception at the end of the tournament. Entry forms can be collected from either course, or you can call Port Royal on 234-0974, and must be submitted by Monday, April 23.

n As anyone who watched the Masters will know, being able to hit the ball 300-yards counts for nothing if you can’t putt.

Happily, Tucker’s Point Golf Club have the answer to all your woes on the green with a weekend dedicated to the art of putting the ball in the hole.

Senior PGA instructor John Graham will be in Bermuda on Saturday and Sunday to teach anyone who’s interested how to read greens successfully.

Lessons will be held from 9am-11.30am and 1pm to 3.30pm both days and cost $165 for Tucker’s members and $200 for non-members.
