Answers to some of the tough questions
If you have any questions on how to talk about alcohol with children, CADA is available to help.
It’s even noted some of the tough questions children may bring up once the topic is raised.
Here are three of the most common tough questions it says parents are asked, along with the organisation’s suggested answers:
l Why do you drink?
You could say: To enhance a meal, to share good times with friends, or to celebrate a special occasion but, adults who choose to drink should always drink in moderation and some people shouldn’t drink at all, including children who are underage.
l You drink alcohol so why can’t I?
You could say: Underage drinking is against the law and for good reason.
Adults’ bodies are fully grown, so alcohol is less harmful to them. Children’s bodies are still growing so alcohol would have a greater negative impact on their health.
l Did you drink when you were a child?
If you drank as a teenager, experts recommend that you give an honest answer.
Explain why you were tempted to try alcohol and why underage drinking is dangerous and how doing it did not serve you well.
You might even share about a negative underage drinking experience of yours.
