Dillas places ninth in strong field

Bermuda amateur golfer Jarryd Dillas finished ninth in the prestigious Terra Cotta Invitational in Florida last weekend.

The highly-ranked amateur event was played on the Naples National Golf Club (Par 72 7,045 yards) and featured a strong international field of 75 players.

Dillas, the reigning and three-time defending Bermuda Amateur Match Play champion, fired rounds of 72-77-69 to finish the 54-hole event at two over par, six shots behind eventual winner Donald Constable of the USA.

Dillas said: “Overall, I’m very pleased with my performance last week. I struggled with the putter in the second round, but I was able to bounce back well and post the best score of the day on Sunday.

His closing 69, a round which included seven birdies and four bogeys, was the only sub-70 score recorded on a blustery final day and helped him jump some 23 places in the standings and post a top-10 finish.

Dillas added: “More than swing mechanics, I’ve been working hard to improve my routine and commitment level to each individual shot. I’m focusing on my processes and trying to concentrate only on that which I can control during my rounds.”

Earlier this week, Dillas got an opportunity rarely afforded to others in the golfing community.

He said: “I went to have a lesson with my swing instructor, Mike Adams, on Monday afternoon. I walked onto the range and there was Tiger Woods working with Sean Foley.

“He was there for about an hour before heading to the course, but it was a pretty cool experience to hit balls next to the game’s best.”

Dillas is back in action next month when he will attempt to navigate Local Qualifying for the 112th US Open Championship. He will begin his quest at The Club at Emerald Hills in Hollywood, Florida on May 10.
