Take more care with tree trimming

Dear Sir,

I thank Brown & Co for reading my letter about my concerns with the butchering of roadside vegetation and for their response as it shows they care, but I am afraid not enough in my book. It is acknowledged by me certainly that it is necessary to remove either entangled trees or close vegetation that may become entangled with the Belco lines. There are two important factors that seem to have been missed and they are:

a) Why destroy all vegetation from beneath and around the overhead lines to that extent (see picture Royal Gazette on May 8)? Whether they are Chinese fan palms or not, palms/trees can take 15 to 20 years to reach the height of the lines, when these lines may well be placed underground in ten years from now; and

b) Our visitors come to this island to see our attractive roadsides, but instead they now seeing partially cut trees and debris laying about and other garbage bottles.

While I am not a professional in this field nor certainly a certified arborist, I have been a gardener for 40-plus years and know how to cut or prune vegetation and of course, part of the exercise is to pick up all the cuttings, rake and leave the area as neat and tidy as possible. The state in which was left at the Dingles Bay area recently is shameful: “Sorry guys.”

Please cut sensibly . trees and branches that will get entangled within the next four to five years and please pick up the cuttings so as not to smoother any seedlings below and generally leave it tidy. I would also like to suggest that wherever possible, that trees and all palms be transplanted to such locations as Southside, St David’s and South Shore, Warwick where both areas appear devoid of vegetation.
