The Bermuda Foundation For Insurance Studies (BFIS) launched its annual summer intern programme yesterday with six students set to learn the ropes of the Island’s re/insurance industry.

Six insurance-focused undergraduate students, including four Bermudians, applied to the programme, which will run until June 8. Bermudians include David Bedard, Alison Charlton, Ryan Eve and Lyndsay Forrest as well as two Americans John Mahoney and Dan Pettie.

Now in its 12th year, the Bermuda-based programme, run in partnership with the Illinois State University’s Katie School of Insurance and Finance, is a comprehensive syllabus covering all aspects of the insurance market from the regulations governing company formations to work-shadowing underwriters. The students will be visiting 31 different insurance and reinsurance companies and related organisations over the course of the internship, learning all aspects of starting and running an insurance company. Yesterday the group kicked off their programme with a visit to the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers (ABIR) and the Bermuda Monetary Authority. They will continue on to speak with law firm Appleby, local insurer Colonial, accountants KPMG as well as insurance companies XL and OIL, among many others.

The second and third intern programme will take place in Chicago and Atlanta from July 9-20.

Allied World Assurance Company, a long-time BFIS Donor and supporter, underwrites the cost of the three programmes.
