Stiff fine for Bermuda day reveller
Swigging vodka on Front Street landed a Devonshire man in jail over Bermuda Day — with a $1,000 fine for insulting bystanders and police.
Antonio Steede, 26, of Aerial View Road, admitted in Magistrates Court to using offensive words at police, and drinking liquor in public.
He was arrested at Harbour Nights on May 23, said Crown counsel Maria Sofianos, when an officer patrolling Front Street was told by members of the public, including a tourist, that Steede had cursed at them.
Asked by the officer if there was a problem, Steede reportedly said: And you can f*** off too.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner fined him $500 for each offence.
Unmoved by a request for time to pay, the magistrate ordered Steede to pay up forthwith.
