Reports ordered for man who smashed stores glass door
Court reports were ordered on a Devonshire man after he admitted drunkenly smashing a glass door.
Gregory Dill, a 50-year-old car washer, admitted causing wilful damage to the Bermudiana Arcade in an incident on Tuesday, but told the court he was not trying to enter the premises.
According to Crown counsel Susan Mulligan, at around 1.30am on the day in question officers responded to a report of an alarm going off at the Queen Street property.
When they arrived, they heard the sound of breaking glass from the buildings roof level. The officers then saw the Upland Street resident standing by a glass door.
Seeing the officers, Dill shouted: Oh. Youre here. You got me.
Along with a broken glass door, the officers noticed that one of the windows to Kit and Caboodle had been smashed. The total cost of damage was estimated to be around $968.
Questioned by police, Dill admitted breaking both the door and the window, but said he wasnt trying to break into the property, telling officers: I just had a fight with my girlfriend.
After Dill pleaded guilty, Ms Mulligan told the court that this was not the first occasion that the defendant had drunkenly damaged other peoples property.
It would seem that alcohol and anger are real issues for this gentleman, she said. It appears he takes out his aggression on other peoples property.
Appearing in Magistrates Court in custody on Wednesday, Dill apologised for the incident, saying that he has been working to stay sober but had been going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings only sporadically.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said that Dill would be more likely to remain sober and attend his meetings should he be supervised and ordered both a social inquiry report and a drug assessment report on the defendant.
The Magistrate also cautioned Dill that he would likely be ordered to pay restitution as part of his eventual sentence. The matter was adjourned until June 28, and Dill was released on $2,000 bail.
