Options: Digicel yesterday announced a range of new data plan options
Digicel customers who send a lot of e-mails, visit a lot of websites or download a lot of music and videos on their phones now have new options for just how much data they can use.
Digicel Bermuda yesterday announced its now offering new postpaid and prepaid data and smartphone plans designed to keep up with customers forever seeking more data. The company will also start offering prepaid internet data plans for the first time.
The company currently offers 2MB, 10MB, and 20MB postpaid data plans. Digicel Bermuda CEO Wayne Caines said those plans will now be replaced by 15MB, 40MB and 80MB plans.
Basically, our customers will be able to get much more data for about the same price, Mr Caines told The Royal Gazette. Customers who were previously paying $35 for 20MB will now pay the same amount for 80MB of data, which is an enormous value increase.
The $45 Premium data plan is being replaced with a 1GB plan for the same price. The company announced earlier this month that on June 1, it would be ending the popular plan, which provided unlimited data to a large portion of its customers.
Customers who signed up for it — or extended their $45 Premium data plans are guaranteed 4G speeds up to 1GB, as outlined in our fair usage policy. The benefit to those customers on the $45 Premium data plan is that they will not incur any overages after the 1GB, said Shane McDonnell, Digicel Bermudas sales director. Customers on the new 1GB plan, however, will be charged five cents per MB once they have reached their data allowance.
Heavier data users now have more option they didnt have before. The company has introduced higher dataplans of 3GB for $70 a month and 7GB for $90 a month.
These allow any heavy data users to choose a higher data limit with consistent 4G speeds, instead of having speeds reduced after 1GB, Mr McDonnell said.
Digicel has also introduced special smartphone plans which allow customers to choose voice and data combinations according to their usage. Each of the plans costs $100 a month and have the added benefit of unlimited Digicel to Digicel calls. The Unlimited unlimited plan, which is $199 a month, offers unlimited voice, texting, and data of 7GB.
In addition to the data and smartphone plans, Digicel says theyre starting to offer prepaid mobile internet plans — a first in Bermuda. The prepaid plans will allow visitors to the Island mobile internet access through a prepaid micro SIM card for their smartphone, tablet, or laptop.
The prepaid mobile internet plans start at $8 for 100MB and go up to $99 for 5GB.
