A new take-out restaurant in Pembroke is opening its doors today offering up fresh fish and traditional Bermudian fare.

Sensational Delights, owned by Sonja Fox, is set to start serving customers today at 11am at 16 Parsons Road, in the building that use to be the Parkside Restaurant.

Ms Fox was the best friend of the former Parkside Restaurant owner, Karen Hudson-Lewis, who was killed last year in Jamaica. Ms Hudson’s family still own the building.

Chicken, beef and fish subs, a selection of salads, milkshakes in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavours will be on the menu along with fresh local fish.

“We serve what Bermudians eat at home — very traditional,” said Ms Fox. “We’ll be offering whatever local fish is available with fast, efficient and good service.”

On Fridays, the shop will have a special where customers can select a piece of fish and have it prepared to their liking. Sensational Delights will also offer catering and delivery to businesses.

While Ms Fox has an existing full-time job, cooking has always been her passion and had been doing a brisk part-time vendor business for the past three years at Harbour Nights in Hamilton and Dockyard, Movie on the Beach nights and other outdoor events.

She caught the cooking bug from her grandfather who was a chef and her grandmother who instilled in her the importance of gathering around the table for family meals.

“I always had a passion for cooking, particularly traditional Bermudian food,” she said.

To help make her dream a reality, she has hired the head chef of former The Green Lantern, Glenmore Barrett, and will have her son (Soniko Thomas), stepson (Troy Fox Jr) and cousin (Gearldgene Cann) working full time.

“It’s a family run business,” said Ms Fox.

She added that she hopes to carry on the legacy of her good friend’s former restaurant in Sensational Delights.

“I feel so excited, I’m emotional and so grateful for the support of Karen’s family for giving me this opportunity to open up and run my business,” she said. “I am humbled.”

The new restaurant will be open Monday through Thursday from 11am-10pm, Friday/Saturday 11am-1am and Sundays 12pm-7pm.
