Keep Bermuda Beautiful has launched a new programme aimed at keeping public areas litter-free.

The Adopt-A-Spot programme, which is an updated version of the once popular Rockwatchers programme, invites residents to adopt a public space and commit to keeping it clean.

Public Works Minister Michael Weeks said the idea to resurrect it came from a student at East End Primary.

“Samuel Bleeker wrote to the Minister of Education, Dame Jennifer Smith, last year to suggest that schools adopt beaches,” he said. “Sam’s efforts spurred KBB to reintroduce the idea and so here we are today to launch the Adopt-A-Spot programme.

“I am a firm believer that we all have a part to play to ensure Bermuda is kept beautiful. As Minister of Public Works responsible for waste management, I am thrilled to lend my support to this most worthy cause.”

KBB director Anne Hyde said that 36 groups have already signed on to take part in the programme. She said KBB’s phones have been ringing off the hook since the launch was first announced.

Among the groups that have already signed on are the Fairmont Southampton, Atlantic Phoenix Lodge, Sandys Boat Club and Francis Patton School.

Individuals and organisations can sign up to clean a specific area be it a street, park, nature reserve or part of the Railway Trail. KBB will then supply trash and recycling bags and disposable gloves and can also help arrange disposal of collected debris.
