Regiment guns rang out across Hamilton this morning to mark the official birthday of Her Majesty the Queen.

Governor George Fergusson inspected the troops at a parade that featured the Regiment, Police and Sea Cadets, among others.

The event also featured the Atholl Highlanders, a Scottish infantry regiment that is in the private employ of the Duke of Atholl, making it Europe's only legal private army.

Dignitaries who watched the parade, which ended with a 21-gun salute, included Premier Paula Cox and Leader of the Opposition Craig Cannonier.

Hordes of local residents and visitors also lined Front Street to watch the ceremony.
