Evans narrowly misses out on Olympic time

Aaron Evans agonisingly missed out on qualifying for the Olympics in the 800 metres while competing for the University io Georgia at the NCAA Championships.

The 20-year-old finished a disappointing seventh in this weekend’s finals in a time of one minute and 46.66 seconds just three tenths of a second off the qualifying mark.

Evans still has one more opportunity to book his ticket to London when he competes at the upcoming Bermuda Track and Field National Championships.

Also missing out on reaching the Olympic standard this weekend was Arantxa King who represented Stanford University at the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

King failed to make the finals of the long jump but did jump a wind-assisted personal best of 13.16 in the triple jump.

Both Evans and King have won medals at previous NCAA Championships.

Bermuda sprinter Tre Houston set a new personal best in the 200 metres competing at a meet in Bulgaria. He came second in his final with a time of 20.87, two tenths of a second off the Olympic standard, and seventh in the 100 metre final in 10.59.

Olympic qualifier Tyrone Smith continued his London preparations bat the Adidas Grand Prix in New York, placing fourth with a leap of 7.73 metres.

Competing in the New England Championships, youngster Dage Minors came third in a time of 1.57.
