Responsibility for Government programmes for the disabled are to be transferred out of the Department of Health, according to Health Minister Zane DeSilva.
On July 1, the developmental disabilities programme will be taken over by the National Office for Seniors and Physically Challenged (NOSPC).
Mr DeSilva said Government had accepted that there have been too many programmes under the direct responsibility of the Chief Medical Officer.
In addition, it is considered best practice that service providers, in this case the Department of Health, not also function as regulators, he said.
The move has also been timed to fit with the Departments continuing search for a new Chief Medical Officer.
Developmental disabilities, which range from physical to cognitive, affect roughly 300 people in Bermuda. Programmes include the Orange Valley Centre and the Opportunity Workshop.
Acting manager of NOSPC John Payne added that the group will hold an labour workshop on June 26 and 27, on employment issues for people with disabilities.
