A group of drumming students will likely be feeling the beat at a weekend recital at Somersfield Academy.
Saturdays performance will feature students of Kevin Mayburys Bermuda Drum Academy.
I have a small group of drumming students, said Mr Maybury. Some of them are fairly new and some have been with me for years.
Our first act will be three students around the age of seven. Later we will also have some more senior students who will do three drum lines.
They will be demonstrating a snare drum technique. My students will also be doing some Afro Cuban and Afro Latin rhythms.
There will also be performances with more contemporary music a Michael Jackson medley and music from the band Paramour.
The way I teach is that I keep my students in the loop and I guide them and we both put their performance together, Mr Maybury said. A lot of the show is the result of a collaboration between myself and my students.
We will also have a special guest, Andrew Sussman who recently won the Bermudas Youth Got Talent competition with his band Paper Cutouts.
He is currently at the Bermuda High School in the International Baccalaureate programme and is a former student of mine.
When he was taking lessons from me he was forming the band and he has come a long way. I am very proud of him.
Mr Maybury said he had deliberately tried to keep the show short one hour and 15 minutes.
He described it as entertaining, with a diversified range of music. This is his first student show in several years.
In the past I had about 60 students a week, plus my regular job, said Mr Maybury. That was killing me. Plus I noticed a lot of children didnt have time to practise.
People are very busy today, and I see a lot of children who are under stress I think, from their busy schedules.
So I cut it down to a handful of students now. Its more enjoyable for me if I am teaching children who really want to learn and are willing to practise.
Saturdays concert will be in the Devonshire schools gymnasium at 5pm.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12. For more information telephone 737-6904.
