Writer follows the food to find the real Bermuda
Where does a tourist go to get some authentic Bermudian cuisine? Rebecca Dolan, a travel writer for the Huffington Post, related her Island-wide quest for local food in an article published yesterday.
Titled To Find the Real Bermuda, Follow the Food, Dolans article describes her trip to a number of restaurants off the typical tourist route. Assisted by her taxi driver, Ray, Ms Dolan managed to seek out a fish sandwich, peas and rice, and a homemade codfish breakfast.
Ms Dolan began at Gombeys, located on Clearwater Beach, looking for Bermudas deep red fish chowder, spiced with pepper oil and local rum. But Gombeys was closed when she arrived, and she called on her taxi driver who brought her to the Black Horse Tavern for conch fritters, conch and mussel stews, and peas and rice.
Her futile search for traditional codfish and potatoes in restaurants, which she dubs the Bermudian breakfast of champions, led her to Rays home. Ray cooked up salt cod for her himself, which she described as one of the best meals of my trip.
Looking for a fish sandwich led Ms Dolan to the back side of Hamilton, hoping for a meal from Art Mels Spicy Dicy, only to find that closed as well. From there her taxi driver rerouted her to the Fish Hut, where she enjoyed one of the best sandwiches in memory.
Ms Dolan closed her article with her wish to come back and visit restaurants she missed, including Fish-N-Tings and the Smokin Barrell food truck. She stated that her experience of following the food led her to fully appreciate the Island.
Those fish sandwiches and conch fritters were a real taste of an island thats more than its pink sand beaches and resorts, she wrote. Its a place with centuries of history and one of unparalleled hospitality.
