Kardias Club live up to name by giving back to community

The Kardias Club has both a most distinctive name and a long record of accomplishments as one of the Island’s key social, cultural and charitable organisations. Their original members were the socialite wives of the black doctors, lawyers and other movers and shakers back in the day.

As a newer and younger group of alpha ladies began asserting themselves, we have been given to understand that it was the foresight of the late Dr CA Smith that led to their anointment with a name he thought embraced their inclinations. He took it from the Greek words ‘kardia’ and ‘kardiakos’ which mean “A Heart to Glow for others’ Good”.

Immediately the ladies upon becoming a Registered Charity began directing their efforts to such specific projects as furnishing the (now) out of business Sunshine League Home’s playroom for wayward boys and renovating Hinson Ward at St Brendan’s Hospital (now called MAWI).

They also raised money for the modernisation of both the kitchen and laundry at the Matilda Smith Williams Rest Home in Paget.

Angelia Roberts, the public relations officer for her club, has a whole stack of good causes they have financed through the hundreds of thousands of dollars they have raised: like $70,000 for the Packwood Home Building Fund; $40,000 donated to ‘Child’s Wish.’ significant donations to the old Brangman Home, funded a chair for the Renal Dialysis Unit at KEMH, and to the hospital’s geriatric unit. Also to thee Family Learning Centre; Age Concern, Prison Fellowship; and Just Between Us, the breast cancer support group.

The list goes on: $12,000 over a three year period to Youth Net; Bermuda Sloop Foundation; the Autism-Tomorrow’s Group; Bermuda College Department of Hotel Technology and Berkeley Educational Society.

Over and above all that the Kardias undertake ordinarily, so to speak, with no fuss or bother, each year members visit rest homes to serve Tea to residents. This past Sunday, they split up in two groups, with one ‘virtually taking over’ Lefroy House at Ireland Island, and the other going to The Sylvia Richardson Residence in St. George’s.
