Disintegrating pride

Dear Sir,

I cannot believe it. Government turned down Habitat for Humanity. Reading the paper this morning (Monday, June 11), I learn that Habitat offered to build these homes for free with the main stipulation that the rents not be increased. True humanity and wonderful for those people who have tried so hard to keep up at least the interior of their homes out of their own pockets for so long. MP Michael Scott feels it is a perfectly feasible proposal Wedco has presented to the tenants.

Government/Wedco will spend money this Island no longer has to build these homes. Of course the rents will be increased, but they will save somewhat on electricity, so they will only have to concentrate on their rent increase. Oh, and they will have new homes. Has Government completely lost its mind? Does greed cloud judgment? Do they think we are all stupid, or that there’s nothing we can do so it doesn’t matter what we think?

My father used to say many things. One saying was: “You can’t eat a house.” Another was: “Pride don’t feed your family.” Any pride that is felt for a “black” party in power, does not feed your family. Is not feeding your family. The pride we felt when this Government first came into power began to disintegrated with the Brown era. They continue to do nothing for us. It seems they will only do what benefits them. All those years of the 40 thieves never bought us to the pit that we are in now. How sad it has only taken this Government such a short time to surpass the sins of the past. When it comes time to vote, for God’s sake, do not put the Progressive Labour Party back into power. Stand up for this Island and for yourselves. Demand a Government that is going to govern with at least some of our interests at heart. We have got to do better than this, and we can only do it with a new Government. The PLP need to do what the United Bermuda Party did. They need to disband and form a new party with hopefully some of the honest and diligent members they have now (and yes they are there) along with some young new blood who are truly interested in Bermuda. Then maybe then we will have two decent parties to choose from, and maybe we can get working again.
