The young photographers involved in the Bermuda National Gallery’s Youth Camera Action (YCA) programme are exhibiting photographic works highlighting the different skills they learned from September 2011 to June 2012. The photographs on exhibit until July 4 at the Bermuda Society of Arts gallery are selected works from 151 graduating YCA Introductory and Intermediate students. They demonstrate skills the students have learned such as aperture, shutter speed, exposure, and colour effects.

In addition there will be a stop motion display featuring films which tackle social issues such as poverty, subsidised housing and graffiti.

The free photography programme for Bermuda’s middle school youth aged 11 to 14, runs through the school year and is sponsored by Catlin End-to-End Bermuda, who generously cover all costs, including instruction, equipment rental, photographic paper and field trip expenses.

BNG Education and Communications Officer, Ms Dany Pen noted: “The BNG encourage students who enter the programme to use art as inspiration for their photo taking sessions. Upon graduating from the programme, students leave with a set of photography skills that allows them to inspire themselves, their family and the community.”

Youth Camera Action empowers students to make independent, creative decisions, she continued, and by empowering our youth, the gallery acknowledges their fundamental role in shaping the future of Bermuda and the world.

The BNG is offering a Youth Camera Action summer programme, sponsored by BTC, for eight weeks. The programme is open to all middle school students ages 11 to 14 years of age, and of any skill level. All cameras and supplies are provided. Students can sign up for one week. Space is limited to 16 students each week.
