Bermuda School Sports Federation (BSSF) have honoured 54 of Bermuda’s finest student-athletes at the 27th annual Denton Hurdle Memorial Awards.

The awards, honouring the late Denton Hurdle, are used to highlight, recognise and reward the finest primary, middle and senior school student-athletes.

Hurdle was a keen sportsman who attended Warwick Academy, Bermuda College and Dalhousie University.

After completing his physical education degree he went on to teach at Warwick Academy. He was an avid sportsman and excelled in football, cricket and volleyball.

His first love however was rugby and he went on to captain Teachers Rugby Football Club and was Bermuda national team regular.

To be nominated for the award, students must display leadership, sportsmanship, self-discipline and dedication.

Only students in the final year of primary, middle or senior school are eligible for this reward.

Zekiah Lewis from West Pembroke won the primary school girls division.

Lewis represented her school in football, netball, track and field, swimming and softball. She is an East Coast Invitational Track Meet medallist and a current member of the national gymnastics team.

Honourable mention was given to Ashley Irby from Saltus Grammar School and Brijette Basden from Francis Patton.

Warwick Academy’s Sajan Harvey won the Primary School Boys division. Harvey excelled on the track this year winning the KPMG Front Street Mile and the 2012 Over 10 Boys BSSF track and Field Champion. He was an All-Star footballer and also competed in rugby, tennis, softball, swimming and cricket.

Honourable mention was awarded to Zaarion Darrell from Dalton E. Tucker Primary and Tariq Simons from Purvis Primary.

The Middle School Girls division was won by Eva Frazzoni from Saltus Grammar School. Frazzoni is currently training with two national programmes. She represents Bermuda at the youth level in tennis and is also training with the National Academy in football. She will be training with FC Virginia this summer in the Super Y League Programme.

Zakiyya Showers from Sandys Secondary Middle School received honourable mention.

Warwick Academy’s Shannon Botelho won the Middle School Boys division. He has represented Bermuda at the CARIFTA swimming championships. Botelho was also part of the Bermuda under-14 rugby team which toured Canada earlier this year.

He is always keen to represent his school and competes in swimming, rugby, volleyball, basketball, cross country, track and field, badminton, tennis, softball and football.

Tyler Smith from Somersfield Academy was awarded honourable mention.

Carifta Games participant Akeila Richardson from CedarBridge Academy won this year’s senior school girls winner. The deputy head girl has also represented Bermuda at the Commonwealth Youth Games as well as the CAC Youth Championships.

She also led CedarBridge as netball captain and won the 2012 Outstanding Teen Award. Rachel Waldron was the recipient of honourable mention.

Joshua Malpas claimed the Senior School Boys Division. Malpas can be seen representing Warwick in basketball, volleyball, track and field, football, swimming, softball, badminton, cross country and tennis. Phillip Burgess of CedarBridge received honourable mention.
