Internet’s slow speed

Dear Sir,

I realise Bermuda is not as fortunate as the United States or Japan, which enjoy much higher internet speeds. The cost of doing business here is very high and I fully get that. However, I do believe there is considerable room for improvement. What I don’t understand, and refuse to accept, is the fact that in Bermuda, I don’t even get the minimal internet speed on a consistent basis. For the 4 Megs which I pay for on a monthly basis, I am lucky to see the arrow reach 1 Meg through the speedtest via my internet providers’ website. I have experienced on numerous occasions where Google takes more than ten seconds to load. Yes, Google the page with just “Google” written on it.

A survey conducted some time ago determined that about 90 percent of households in Bermuda have computers. Certainly, one can assume that those households with internet access are not a far way off from the 90th percentile either. Instead of wasting thousands in court fighting with one another, it would make more sense to invest that money into the infrastructure so that the public gets better service. What are we paying for? The money would be better spent not only increasing our speeds, but ensuring that we can attain those speeds no matter the time of day or peak times. No one buys a Ferrari and then finds out that its performance will be likened to a Kia. I was not surprised to see in the news recently that other customers are unsatisfied with their service as well. Imagine if Government actually allowed other companies from abroad to open up shop here in the reforms. I am sure that the public would welcome this as the possibilities of us getting the service that we deserve will finally come to fruition.
