Young Bermuda swimmers scooped an impressive 22 medals at the Michael Lohberg Invitational Swim Meet in Florida at the weekend.

Although the wet and stormy weather temporarily halted racing at the outdoor pool, the Island’s youngsters didn’t allow the delays to get he better of them.

The medal haul over the three-day event included four gold medals, ten silver and eight bronze.

Competing at the competition were Emma Harvey and Ashley Irby (nine to ten Girls), Madelyn Moore (11 to 12 Girls), Somer Froud, Erica Hawley and Olivia Moore (13 to 14 Girls), Tyler Smith (13 to 14 Boys), Sophie Froud (15 and over Girls) and Vaughn Rowse (15 and over Boys).

Harvey was one of the meet’s best swimmers, claiming total of eight medals including gold in the 50 metre butterfly and backstroke, silver in the 50 breaststroke, 200 Individual Medley, and 100 breast, fly and backstroke events. She also grabbed a bronze in the 50 free.

Irby also had a meet to remember, helping herself to seven medals, including two silver (50 free, 100 free) and five bronze (200 IM, 200 free, 50 back, 100 breast, 100 back).

Tyler Smith snatched three medals in the 100 back (bronze), 200 back (silver) and 400 free (silver), while Madelyn Moore bulked up the gold medal tally with two golds in the 50 free and 50 back, while also capturing a silver in the 50 free.

Sophie Froud won a bronze medal in the 100 free.

National team coach Richard Goodwin was pleased the overall performances of the team under less than ideal conditions.

“The results from this meet were outstanding and all credit must go to this small but highly determined team,” said Goodwin.

“They competed with distinction and I am extremely proud of what they have accomplished under trying conditions.”
