Angry man smashed shopping mall door

A carwasher who smashed a window and door at a Hamilton shopping mall has been fined and ordered to pay for the damage.

Gregory Dill, 50, from Devonshire, pleaded guilty during an earlier court hearing to shattering the glass panes at the Bermudiana Arcade on May 22.

He insisted that he caused the damage because he was mad at his girlfriend, not because he was trying to break in.

Police arrived around 1.30am after an alarm went off at the arcade. Confronted, Dill said: "Oh, you're here. You got me."

Prosecutor Susan Mulligan told Magistrates’ Court in May: "It appears alcohol and anger are real issues for the gentleman. It appears he takes out his anger on other people's property."

Dill admitted he had been drinking. Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered pre-sentence reports, including an assessment of Dill’s alcohol abuse.

However, he noted yesterday that Dill did not turn up to multiple appointments in order to get the reports done.

“You wasted my time,” he told the defendant, ordering him to pay a $400 fine and $968 to cover the damage to the mall, or go to prison for three months instead.
