Construction Association, Training Board unite to assess masons’ knowledge

Economy Minister Patrice Minors is urging masons to have their skill levels assessed so that they can be better matched to suitable employment opportunities.

The Construction Association of Bermuda (CAOB), the Bermuda College and the National Training Board (NTB) created an assessment questionnaire that tests masons’ theoretical knowledge.

Results from the assessment determine whether a worker is a labourer, skilled labourer, junior mason, mason or top grade mason.

This assessment process was initiated after the February construction job fair.

Industry stakeholders indicated that some people who had designated themselves as masons did not actually have the qualifications for that title.

The 148 unemployed people registered as masons with the Department of Labour and Training were invited to come take an assessment.

As of June 13, 22 had completed assessments and been classified by their skill level.

The Department of Labour and Training is offering assistance to those who wish to improve their skills by enrolling in technical courses at the Bermuda College.

Mrs Minors encourages all remaining registered individuals to take the masonry skills assessment. Sessions will be ongoing throughout July.
