Storm knocks out swing bridge

Traffic to and from St George’s ground to a halt yesterday after a lightning strike left the swing bridge stuck open.
The incident happened at around 11.30am, leading to long lines of traffic on both sides of the bridge.
A Belco spokeswoman said that the company sent a crew to investigate the problem and discovered that an insulator on a nearby utility pole had been struck by lightning.
The crew repaired the damaged utility pole, and the bridge was operational again by 12.30pm.
While the issue only lasted around an hour, St George’s Mayor Kenneth Bascome said yesterday that the problem clearly demonstrated the town’s need for a fully functional fire and police station.
“Just imagine if there was a fire,” Mr Bascome said. “This is just another example of what could happen if there is a major incident.
“We need a fire station and a police station on this side of the bridge, but it seems the person responsible doesn’t see that.
“I ask the community to stand up and go forward in unison making the officials and the Government aware of what can happen.”
