Cup Match icons to be honoured
Three Cup Match icons will be honoured by St Paul AME Church tomorrow when the chuch celebrates Emancipation Sunday.
A statement from the church said a 10.55am Service of Praise and Thanksgiving will feature special music from the Senior Choir, and a congregation dressed in Cup Match colours.
Strong Christian men who have made contributions to the Annual Classic will be honoured: Major Randall Butler ED (umpire), Dennis Wainwright MBE (St Georges) and Reginald (Reggie) Tucker (Somerset). The executives of both clubs and the Umpires Association will be in attendance.
Emancipation Day is commeorated on the first day of Cup Match, and falls on August 2 this year.
We at St Paul are determined to highlight the importance of Emancipation and give thanks to God for the 178th anniversary of this important event, calling to remembrance the work of the ancestors and inspiring this current generation to greatness, said Pastor Rev Dr Lanel Guyton.
Pastor Guyton will also offer a prayer for peace during the holiday.
He said: St Paul is a community church, welcoming all into fellowship and by recognising this premier community event we aim to promote healthy, positive rivalry and family fun during this holiday.
