A 51-year-old man is in hospital after his pedal cycle and a taxi collided on South Road in Smith's.

According to police, the Paget resident in now in "serious condition" at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital.

The accident occurred around 11.35am near St Mark's Church.

Said a Police spokesman: "It appears that a taxi was travelling East and a 51-year-old Paget man was travelling West on a pedal cycle when they collided. A physician happened to be in the area and rendered first aid until the ambulance could be summoned."

Witnesses are asked to telephone 295-0011 with any information.
