Cup Match veteran Darrell dies, age 92

The second oldest surviving Cup Match player, Winfield Darrell, died this week at the age of 92.

Darrell played one Cup Match for St. George’s, in 1942 as an all-rounder. He was the older brother of former St. George’s captain Neville Darrell.

Darrell was one of the players honoured by Heritage Productions at their eighth annual Emancipation Awards Luncheon just prior to this year’s Cup Match but was unable to attend due to poor health.

He was the second oldest Cup Match player behind Somerset’s Woodgate Simmons who will be 93 in September.

Leroy (Tubby) Richardson is now the oldest surviving former St. George’s player at age 91.

A graveside service for Darrell was held on Tuesday.
