Hurricane Fabian memorial ride takes place Sunday
A memorial ride honouring four people who died during Hurricane Fabian takes place on Sunday.
Organised by the September 5th Foundation, the ride is hoped to raise funds for the families of those who lost their lives during the 2003 storm.
Police officers Stephen Symons and Nicole OConner, station duty officer Gladys Saunders and civilian Manuel Pacheco were swept off the Causeway after their vehicles broke down in the midst of the storm. A spokesman for the foundation said: The events of 2003 remain almost as vivid now, even though this tragic event was some nine years ago.
The [Bermuda Police] Service had never experienced multiple loss of life in a single event. It was a tragedy, and it was life-changing for the families and all who served in the Bermuda Police.
As each year marches on, we draw closer to the day when the eldest of the children will enter postsecondary education. The foundation will be there to financially assist as much as we can.
Riders will leave from City Hall at 2pm, and will progress to a memorial bench on Kindley Field Road for a short tribute. A reception will follow at Police Recreation Club in Devonshire at 3.30pm.
Friends, family members and concerned residents are encouraged to take part in the ride, with commemorative pins available for purchase on the day.
