School’s enrolment figure beats prediction

Saltus Grammar School has announced an enrolment figure of 931 for the new school year, marginally higher than expected.

The school lost 47 students last year due to their families relocating, leading to the loss of five teaching assistant jobs.

However it has surpassed the budgeted enrolment figure of 927 students this month, as a result of extra students moving to the Island. The total number is still down on last year’s 955.

The school said in a statement: “We had 47 students leave Saltus last year due to their families relocating but are encouraged as we have enrolled some new students who have recently moved here.

“When our headteacher, Ted Staunton, arrived three years ago, we had an enrolment of 1,150. He felt the student body was too large and so decided to ‘rightsize’ the enrolment systematically to 900 students.

“By reducing enrolment, we feel that we can offer a higher quality education to each and every student.

“The recent announcement of our highest GCSE results ever provide proof that this has been the right strategic direction for Saltus Grammar School.”

Meanwhile, Warwick Academy’s number of students has increased this year, from 769 to 773, news described as very positive by deputy principal David Horan.
