Trial date set for man accused of injuring woman
A Southampton man charged in Magistrates Court with causing grievous bodily harm told the court he got into the fight while asleep.
Colin Menzies, 43, of High Point Lane, denied the September 8 charge against Joanne Hassell.
He told Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner that Ms Hassell had come to his residence at night and become unruly, adding: At one point I had to wrestle her.
Saying he fell asleep at 12.30am, Mr Menzies claimed that when he awoke, she was on the floor, I was kicking her, and blood was gushing from my mouth.
Mr Warner asked: You were kicking her and didnt know?
Defence lawyer Leonard Holder told the court it could happen as an instinctive reaction to being set upon while asleep.
Mr Warner set an October trial date, and remanded the accused into custody until then.
