A serial thief was handed a suspended sentence after admitting to trespassing.

Richard Michael Dill, 45, of Marsh Lane, Pembroke, pleaded guilty to trespassing on the property of Marketplace Ltd, in Somerset, on September 13.

Magistrates’ Court heard that the store manager, David Scott, was informed that the defendant was on the supermarket’s property after he had been previously served a written notice banning him from all Marketplace properties.

In court, Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner addressed the defendant, asking: “You know you’ve been banned from going to Marketplace?”

Dill replied: “Yes, but I don’t remember receiving any letter.”

Mr Warner said that the defendant was banned for stealing from the supermarket on multiple occasions over the years.

“A letter was served on you and you know that. Don’t go on the people’s property,” Mr Warner instructed.

He added: “You’ve got probation, fines, suspended sentences — all for stealing. That’s why people don’t want you on their property.”

Dill was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment suspended for 12 months.
