Hall of Fame boxer Troy Darrell says Teresa Perozzi has what it takes to win her upcoming WBA and WBC world middleweight unification championship bout with Tori Nelson.

Perozzi will rest her WBA belt on the line against her American rival while vying for the vacant WBC belt at next week’s All or Nothing WBC & WBA World Middlewight Boxing Championship at Fairmont Southampton.

Darrell reckons Perozzi has the weapons in her arsenal to beat her rival and sees no reason why she can’t deliver the goods in front of the home crowd.

“I know Teresa can win the fight and she has a strong will,” he said. “It’s just a matter of putting the package together.

“She has the power and the will and hopefully she comes out a winner and takes the belts.”

While confident Perozzi can overcome her latest challenge in the ring, former New York State junior middleweight champion Darrell admits the local southpaw will have her work cut out against the unbeaten Nelson.

“This girl Teresa is fighting is a tough fighter and I have seen a little clipping of her,” he said. “This girl is supposed to be a good fighter.”

Darrell, who ended his illustrious professional career with an impressive 26-3-0 record that included 22 knockouts, is currently helping Perozzi prepare for her upcoming fight on home turf.

And so far he’s impressed by what he has seen from the mother of one whose pro record stands at 9-4-1.

“Teresa is working very hard and she’s looking pretty good,” Darrell said. “It’s just a few habits she has that I’m trying to smoothen out.

“They (Nelson’s camp) have probably seen tapes of her and her habits, so I’m trying to straighten out her habits and give her more ammunition. I want Teresa to have a good defence and also be able to mix it up with this girl who is supposed to be a good fighter.

“I would say we’re about half-way where I would like to see Teresa be, so hopefully the night of the fight everything will just fall in place like a puzzle.”

In the lead-up to the fight Perozzi has gone the extra mile, whipping herself into physical shape outside of sparring sessions.

“Teresa looks pretty decent as far as endurance is concerned,” Darrell said. “Everyone is in shape at the gym (Forty Rego’s Gym) and she’s basically doing a good job as far as sparring and being able to take blows and keep on going. Her condition looks pretty fair, but there’s always room for improvement and the night of the fight will really tell.”

To enhance her chances of success in her upcoming bout, Darrell said Perozzi would also have to be mentally sharp in the ring.

“I think the mental part is like 80 percent of it,” he added. “You can be physically fit but if you are not tuned in mentally you will lose.

“Teresa needs to go mentally into herself and see herself doing what she wants to do. Things are not going to go your own way all the time, so you have to mentally prepare yourself for the ups and downs and bumps and bruises.

“As a coach I can tell Teresa this and show her that. But at the end of the day she’s the only one who is going to be in the ring, so she has to become mentally, physically and emotionally involved in what she’s doing.”

Tickets for the upcoming fight can be purchased at International Sports Shop and also online at Ptix.bm.
