The Bermuda Diabetes Association will this month host two events aimed at helping diabetes sufferers better understand their condition.

The “Know Your Numbers” seminars, developed by Diabetes educator Sara McKittrick, will detail the impact of food, medication, activity and stress on blood sugar levels, and help sufferers know how to get better control of their blood glucose levels.

“Diabetes is very common in Bermuda, and a serious threat to the quality of life for so many,” Ms McKittrick said. “Keeping blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible can be a lifesaver.

“Tight control can delay or slow the progression of the long-term complications of diabetes.”

Diabetes is widespread in Bermuda, with as many as one in four Bermudians either living with the condition, or at risk of developing it. Alison Hill, CEO of the Argus Group said the free seminars will deliver valuable information to sufferers.

The seminars will take place tomorrow and on November 22 between 12.15pm and 1.30pm at the Chamber of Commerce meeting room at Albuoy’s Point.

Those interested in attending are asked to sign up as soon as possible by calling 297-8427 or e-mailing bda@northrock.bm because seating is limited.

Other events being held to mark Diabetes Month 2012 include two Chewstick events this weekend, the Esso to Esso walk on November 18 and a Denim for Diabetes day on November 30.
