Residents decide they will fix public dock

Southampton residents fed up with Government’s refusal to fix Evans Bay dock have been forced to take on the task themselves, MP Charlie Swan has claimed.

The Southampton West Central candidate for the United Bermuda Party said residents have complained of missing life rings and railings and broken garbage cans at the public dock since 2008.

Users of the dock have suffered injuries because the repairs haven’t been made, he added.

“Residents have raised the issue directly with the concerned Minister and Ministry officials, but nothing has been done,” he said.

“Members of the general public, including residents of the area and children, regularly use the dock for boating, fishing and swimming.

“As a direct result of this dock’s condition and Government inaction, citizens have been injured — including bruising ribs, cuts and abrasions to feet and hands and the like.”

The residents have now agreed to repair the dock themselves, he added.

“Today, residents are fed up and tired of their Government’s inaction, they have had enough of tending to theirs and neighbours’ children’s cuts and bruises, of slips causing bruised and cracked ribs requiring medical attention.

“They are tired of continually meeting with elected representatives of this Government, representatives they now consider self-serving, unthinking, uncaring and unresponsive individuals.

“They have decided to take matters into their own hands, and carry out the repairs themselves.”
