Q: What is a gateway?

A: A gateway can be either a physical piece of hardware or software that acts as a highway and permits the transport (exchange) of data between multiple computers/sites.

You may not realise it, but when sending data from yourself to a friend for example, it will pass through multiple ‘gateways’ along the way. Examples of physical gateways would be servers and routers.
