Miss Burgess was born in Flatts Village on September 29, 1912. She was the third of six children. Her parents were George and Odessa Harvey-Burgess.
Longevity runs in her family, as her younger sister Iris William is 96 years old, and Miss Burgess spent much of her life caring for her mother who died at the age of 92 years.
She never married or had any children, but she was very interested in the lives of her nieces and nephews and was happiest when she could take them with her to the Pentecostal Church in Flatts, said her niece Marquita Thorne.
As a young woman Emily worked as a housekeeper and cook for the Zuill and Conyers families and was known for preparing delicious dishes.
We remember her as being a very serious person, said niece Maranita Cummings.
