Limits. Have you ever taken notice of the various limits that either our community or even those that we put on ourselves?

Whether or not it is a speed limit, a sale that limits you to one item per person, or some other measure, these obstacles seem to become part of everyday life.

The challenge is to ensure that these limits do not, in fact, become part of your processes so that whatever you try to do you put limits on yourself and what you can achieve.

You do not want these limits to become a self-fulfilling prophecy that puts constraints on your thinking as you work to solve problems or create new opportunities. So make a list of the “limits” that you seem to apply to yourself and make a conscious effort to remove these from your thinking.

You will be amazed at how much more you accomplish.

“We are born into a vast room whose walls consist of a thousand doors of possibility. Each door is flung open to the world outside, and the room is filled with light and noise. We close some of the doors deliberately, sometimes with fear, sometimes with calm certainty. Others seem to close by themselves, some so quietly that we do not even notice.” — Terry Teachout (from his book, “City Limits”)

Diabetes. November 14 was World Diabetes Day. This is a day when the world stops and recognises the increasing epidemic that diabetes has become.

A lifestyle disease that is destroying lives, families, and costing communities and countries in both time lost and significant economic impact.

Take a moment and visit www.idf.org and www.diabetes.bm to learn more about this serious challenge that we all must face together. The solution lies in educating our populations on the positives of healthy living including proper diet and exercise.

The education of our very young children is a key — as with the battle against smoking, the change will require action one step at a time! So take a moment and educate yourselves and help all Member Associations of the IDF to extend the impact that they have in their communities. To me this is personal — I am a person with diabetes and am currently the chair of the Bermuda Diabetes Association. If you can help, please get in touch with me.

“World Diabetes Day raises global awareness of diabetes — its escalating rates around the world and how to prevent the illness in most cases. Started by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and WHO, the Day is celebrated on 14 November to mark the birthday of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, was instrumental in the discovery of insulin in 1922, a life-saving treatment for diabetes patients.” — World Health Organisation, 2012
