Promising tennis player Daniel Phillips savoured doubles glory at the 2012 Little Mo International Junior Championships in Florida earlier this week.

The Temple of Tennis youth player teamed up with Peruvian Ignacio Buse to win the under-eight boys doubles competition, scoring an 8-5 victory ove Alexi Khamrotau (Belarus) and Anton Kogay (Canada).

Somerset Primary student Phillips also impressed during the Under-eight singles competition, reaching the semi-finals where he lost 6-3, 7-5 against Columbian Feliz Pinzon. He suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat against Egypt’s Omar Elsamahy in the third/fourth place play-off.

The youngster was invited to team up with Buse in doubles play after his outstanding form in the singles competition playing against older and stronger opponents.

Phillips is now scheduled to compete in the upcoming Mini Mo Tournament in Port Lucie, Florida along with sister Imani and Ricky Mallory III who also competed at the Little Mo event held in West Palm Beach.

Imani lost to Sweden’s Viktoria Jonason 6-2, 6-2 in her second round match in the under-10 girls after receiving a first-round bye. She also went down 6-3, 6-0 to USA’s Taylor Kopan in the first round consolation match.

Mallory started off on a promising note, winning 6-2, 6-4 against Canadian Vladimar Van in his first round match in the under-10 boys age group. However, he bowed out after losing 6-0, 6-2 to top seed Jameson Corsillo (USA) in the second round.

The trio are being accompanied in Florida by Temple of Tennis president Ricky Mallory, director Sammy Maybury, secretary Sarah Fellows and coach Gavin Manders. Manders has made the trip in spite of injuries he suffered in a road accident late last month.

Based at Port Royal Golf Course, the Temple of Tennis is a registered charity whose mission is to provide a sustainable formula for tennis development from grassroots to professional level.
