Man tried to trick bookies with altered slip
A bad gamble didn’t pay off for a Southampton teen, after his attempt to alter his betting slip landed him in Magistrates’ Court on charges of deception.
Aaron Famous, 19, tried to change his loss to a win of nearly $1,000 at Hamilton bookies Sea Horses on December 9.
Famous had bet on top scorer Robin Van Persie of Manchester United to score the first goal in a match against Manchester City.
The court heard that after changing the slip to show Van Persie scoring last, Famous handed it in at the counter — but the form didn’t match his original.
Asked by Sea Horses if he’d tampered with the form, Famous said someone else must have done it, but also claimed it hadn’t left his possession. Staff contacted police.
Famous admitted trying to defraud the bookies of $970, as well as using a false instrument for manager Lee Beauchamp to accept as genuine.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner ordered a social inquiry report, set a March 28 sentence date, and granted Famous $1,000 bail.
