Dear Sir,
“We could not give what we were not empowered to give”. Did I read that right?! It is certainly questionable, with regard to this whole sorry escapade, as to whether any legal advice was ever given, and, if so, listened to. God Bless the Uighurs, but, through no fault of their own, here we have four (not one, not two, not three but four) Uighurs being squirrelled into Bermuda under cover of darkness, with the Premier of the day carrying out this ‘humanitarian’ deed with his cohort Minister.
Never, for a second, did anyone believe this was a rescue mission on humanitarian grounds; at the least, more like self-aggrandisement. Consulting with the British Government by either of these individuals was never a consideration; it became clear that they drew euphoric pleasure in ignoring anything remotely connected to Britain, and which, to them, might have been seen as ‘returning to the plantation’. Indeed, ‘humanitarian’ was the furthest from their thoughts, given the Uighur’s dilemma today. Phil Perinchief’s excellent letter of January 22 covering this debacle is a most worthy read.
