Westerfield posts fastest time

The new harness racing season continues to excite at Vesey Street

Andrea Westerfield and Ryan Manders continued their impressive starts to the harness racing season during last weekend’s launch of the Bermuda CableVision Friday Night Series at the Bermuda Equestrian Centre.

Female driver Westerfield posted the season’s fastest time for the second straight week, while Warwick Academy student Manders moved up a time bar and got a leg into another to underline his potential.

Westerfield lowered the bar twice, going 1:05/1 in heat 18 in the 1:04/4 & Faster time bar, two fifths of a second faster than the 1:05/3 she posted with Eddie Roque’s stallion GV Crystal Ball the week before.

Kiera Whited, at the helm of Charles Whited’s mare Black & Mild, managed to grab a share of the season’s fastest time with Westerfield momentarily after also posting a 1:05/1 in the same heat.

However, Westerfield regained sole possession of the distinction after going 1:04/2 in heat 24.

The existing track record, set by retired stallion Big Red Machine nearly three-years ago, stands at 1:01/4.

Manders, the youngest driver at the track, also had a night to remember.

The son of Arnold Manders, the Driving Horse and Pony Club president, moved out of the 1:13-1:16 time bar after returning a 1:11/2 in heat four with gelding A Touch of Red.

The 11-year-old driver lowered the bar even further in heat ten, posting a 1:10/1 to get a leg out of the 1:10/2-1:13 time bar.

Getting a leg out of their respective time bars were Andy Stoneham with stallion Custard the Dragon, Keira Whited with mare IC’s Overextended and Casey Truran with mare Inwood’s Generation.

Kirista Rabain, Tyler Lopes, Colin Mello, Casey Truran, Westerfield and Manders were among the night’s multiple heat winners.

The Bermuda CableVision Friday Night Series sees the three fastest drivers on average time in their respective divisions receive cash earnings.

Harness racing resumes at Vesey Street on Saturday.
