Lawyer charged with perverting justice

Three men, including a defence lawyer, were charged yesterday with perverting the course of justice during a Supreme Court trial.

Lawyer Kamal Worrell, 34, Devon Hewey, 26, and Dujon Reid-Anderson, 28, were charged with a series of offences, including conspiring with others to have Levon Thomas give false evidence in the Supreme Court trial of Mr Hewey and Cervio Cox.

Six charges were laid against the men, all of which allegedly occurred between July 1 and September 23 this year.

Mr Reid-Anderson was charged with threatening and promising to give Mr Thomas payment or protection to induce him to give false evidence, while Mr Hewey is charged with promising Mr Thomas that Mr Cox would give him money in exchange for giving false evidence during the trial.

Mr Worrell was charged with Mr Hewey with intending to mislead the Supreme Court by knowingly using false evidence, specifically that Mr Thomas knew Mr Hewey and that he was not the rider of a motorcycle from which shots were fired at him.

He was also charged alongside Mr Reid-Anderson with counselling or procuring Mr Thomas to give false evidence.

None of the men were required to enter a plea as the Crown referred the matter to the Supreme Court to be heard.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo released all three defendants on $10,000 bail with a like surety.

He further ordered that Mr Reid-Anderson, a Jamaican national, wear an electronic monitoring device and not leave the Island.

The matter is expected to return to Magistrates’ Court later this month to be mentioned.
