Terceira’s work highlighted in book

Designs by Peter Terceira, seen here with his wife Vesna, for villas at Ariel Sands are included in Houses For All Regions by the American Institute of Architects

Work by Bermudian architect Peter Terceira has been highlighted in a special coffee table book.

His designs for the villas at Ariel Sands were profiled in Houses For All Regions by the American Institute of Architects.

The book was published last October, the same month Mr Terceira closed his firm, Terceira Quarterly Associates.

“I know there have been other Bermuda firms who have been included in architectural magazines, but this is an actual book,” said Mr Terceira, who has since moved to Croatia with his family. The villas are at the Devonshire property owned by Hollywood superstar Michael Douglas.

They were designed by Terceira Quarterly in 2007.

The AIA publishes a book annually that aims to celebrate high quality residential design work from around the world. Judges vet submissions based on professionalism, craft, function and inspiration.

Mr Terceira has also done interior work on Chopsticks Restaurant and the now defunct Silk Restaurant.

“I was in partnership with Glyn Quarterly, but when the economy went soft there was less work and we closed in October 2014,” he said. “We are now working independently.”

Mr Terceira lives in Lovran with his Croatian wife Vesna and their two daughters. He is currently renovating a residential building into condos. His family live in one of the units.

He said dealing with the Croatian bureaucracy to carry out the project has been a real eye-opener.

“You don’t just get something stamped by one person, but by three different people,” he said. “You have to take your letter, yourself, to three different offices to get it stamped. Sometimes it could be five offices. In terms of buying a building, you don’t get a kitchen when you buy. You get a room with some wiring and plumbing and you add the rest.”

The homes in his area are in a Mediterranean style with terracotta tiles and high vaulted ceilings inside.

To relax he likes to motorcycle down the Croatian coast to the town of Zadar.

“The motorcycle community is something I am just getting into,” he said. “The coast is really beautiful and amazing. There is a real sense of freedom here.”

He hopes to return home to Bermuda next month in search of architectural opportunities produced by the 2017 America’s Cup.
